Designer Statement
Hello, my name is Luke. I'm a senior at UW Madison studying computer science with a certificate in game design. As a prospective designer coming out of Game Design 1, I’ve come to realize that my passion lies in crafting games that are rooted in mechanics rather than narratives or storytelling. While I respect the artistry behind games that tell compelling narratives and/or tackle serious themes, my interest is in creating games that feel good to play. Intuitive gameplay, system dynamics, interesting challenges, scaling difficulty, narrative/character strength, and understanding the player base are some concepts that I've learned since the start of the semester, some of which stuck better than others.
I aspire to create games that have a balance between fun and challenge, having players navigate along a carefully designed path where dynamic mechanics and thoughtful design are the source of challenge and fun. The player experience is paramount, the more polished the mechanics of a game, the more I can appreciate it. While providing reasoning for player to want to progress can come from a narrative or a serious lesson, I feel proposing a challenge to improve to a player can achieve the same purpose.
I'm not quite where I want to be as a creator yet. I'm aware I need a lot of work to create the kinds of games I would like to pursue and am looking forward to improving both through classes and from experience I can gain on my own.
